Executive Director

POSITION OVERVIEW:
Compensation: $125,000 – $140,000 DOE/neg.
Location: San Diego, CA
Reports to: Board of Directors
Direct reports: 6 (Programs and Client Services Provider, Social Worker, Office Manager, Events Manager, Bookkeeper Consultant, IT Consultant)

WHO WE ARE:
One in ten individuals will have a seizure in their lifetime. The Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County (EFSDC) leads the fight to stop seizures, find a cure, save lives, and overcome the challenges created by epilepsy through education, advocacy, and research. To combat this debilitating condition, we offer personal advocacy and counseling, seizure first aid training, expressive arts therapy, youth camps and a variety of supportive services. All services are free and available to anyone whose life is touched by epilepsy. EFSDC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization governed by a 14-person Board of Directors and a Professional Advisory Council comprised of industry experts and healthcare professionals. POSITION SUMMARY:
EFSDC seeks an experienced executive to build the organization to its full potential. Although our history dates back to 1953, we still have incredible opportunity for growth! Working closely with the Board, the Executive Director will oversee all areas of EFSDC’s operations, including fundraising, administration, strategic planning, marketing and community outreach, events, and programs. She/he will manage an annual budget of approximately $1M and supervise a staff of 6 team members.

Initial priorities for this position include:
1. Sustaining and growing funding; including signature events.
2. Board recruitment and development.
3. Coaching, mentoring, and developing staff.
4. Business operations; creating and implementing new administrative systems.
5. Executing a marketing & communications strategy to build brand awareness.
6. Forming and strengthening relationships with partners throughout the community

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
People and Strategy
o Promote a collaborative work environment where all staff are engaged, informed, and empowered to participate.
o Team building and staff development; responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of all employees.
o Foster open and effective communication with the Board, inviting Board members’ opinions and suggestions.
o Assist with Board outreach and recruitment.
o Increase the level of Board engagement and giving potential.
o Coach Board members on best practices and activating their giving networks.

Development and Fundraising
o Diversify EFSDC’s revenue streams, ensuring the organization is on the path to financial sustainability and growth.
o Build and cultivate a donor portfolio and stewardship plan.
o Enhance the organization’s grant-writing capacity (internally or with consultants).

Business Operations
o Overhaul business operations and workflow and implement best practices in nonprofit management.
o Oversee and direct budgeting, accounting and long-range forecasting activities.
o Ensure existing and potential new programs and events advance EPSDC’s mission, are financially sustainable, and adequately staffed.

Branding, Marketing and Communications
o Serve as EFSDC’s main spokesperson to the general public, key partners and donors.
o Oversee EFSDC’s traditional and social media strategies and plans.
o Boost brand awareness locally as well as EPSDC’s overall footprint in southern California.

QUALIFICATIONS:
o Minimum of 5 years in leadership or senior management positions.
o Possesses excellent change management skills and a growth mindset.
o Strong conflict resolution and negotiation skills.
o Experience developing and managing annual budgets over $800,000.
o Proven success with fundraising and increasing organizational revenue.
o Experience working with a board of community leaders, including reporting, advising and board member recruitment.
o Experience with a health-focused organization preferred.
o Familiarity with the management of leases, maintenance agreements and vendor contracts.
o Demonstrated strategic planning experience.
o A high level of emotional intelligence, with strong written and oral communication skills.
o Superior attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
o Fosters a respectful, transparent, and collaborative work environment.
o Flexible to work evenings and weekends as required for programs and special events.
